Jamaica Embarks on Ambitious Tourism Expansion

Jamaica is charting an ambitious course for its tourism sector, unveiling a comprehensive five-year strategy designed to significantly boost visitor numbers and revenue by the year 2030. The plan, which builds upon the island nation’s recent successes, aims to solidify Jamaica’s position as a premier travel destination in the Caribbean.

Reaching New Heights: The 5 by 5 Vision

The central objective of the strategy is to attract 5 million visitors and generate $5 billion in revenue. This ambitious goal follows the remarkable achievement of the “4 by 4” target in 2024, which saw the island welcoming 4 million visitors and realizing $4 billion in tourism revenue. This track record of success provides a strong foundation for the continued growth outlined in the new plan.

Investing in Infrastructure and Accessibility

A key component of Jamaica’s tourism strategy involves significant infrastructure investments aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing the visitor experience. The government is actively constructing a new bypass designed to drastically reduce travel times between ports of entry and the popular resort towns. This initiative is intended to ensure that all visitors can reach their chosen resorts from either an airport or seaport in under 90 minutes.

Expanding Accommodation Capacity

Recognizing the importance of adequate accommodation, Jamaica is focused on expanding its hotel room inventory. The island currently boasts 35,000 hotel rooms, and the strategic goal is to increase this number to 50,000 rooms by 2030. This expansion is critical to accommodate the projected increase in visitors.

Fueling Growth through New Resort Developments

Several major resort projects are underway and planned, representing substantial foreign direct investments in the Jamaican economy. These investments, totaling $3.5 billion, are expected to create over 30,000 jobs, further bolstering the country’s economy. The recent opening of the Princess Grand Jamaica resort in 2024, with its 2,000 rooms and planned casino, exemplifies this wave of development.

New Resorts and Developments Announced

Further enhancing the island’s appeal, a number of new resort openings are scheduled. The Caribbean’s first Unico resort is slated to open in December, adding a unique offering to the island’s hospitality landscape. Montego Bay is also set to welcome a Dreams Resort, a Planet Hollywood, and Vista Ambassadors. Adding to the luxury options available, the Pinnacle resort is expected to open in 2028.

Empowering the Workforce Through Certification Programs

To ensure a skilled and prepared workforce for the burgeoning tourism sector, Jamaica is investing heavily in training and certification programs. The Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation is spearheading this effort, having already certified over 30,000 tourism workers. These programs, delivered in collaboration with the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and the American Culinary Federation, are designed to equip young professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the industry, creating a pipeline of job-ready professionals.
